(Exhibited throughout the city of Sorocaba and at SESC Sorocaba)
Um Vazio Pleno / A Full Void was shown and developed for Frestas Trienal 2017 in Sorocaba (SP) 2017, curated by Daniela Labra.
The project consists of many and manifolded collaborations - all names and detailed informations are listed below.
Sorocaba has relegated the long-term presence of indigenous peoples in the history of the city to a few pots, funerary urns and ceramic shards of some distant past - the only remains of much that was destroyed as a result of the invasion. Maximino Rodrigues, Guarani, a teacher and leader from the Jaguapirú Aldeia in Dourados, Mato Grosso do Sul, produced the ceramic works inspired by those few ceramics archived in Sorocaba. These ceramics made by Mr. Rodrigues were then placed, semi-buried, in public places throughout the city.
The work is an attempt to question the denial of the indigenous presence in the history of the making of Sorocaba which states that one man founded the city. The people who made Sorocaba, the people who provided the labor for the foundation and making of Sorocaba at the “founding” of the city were four hundred indigenous peoples who had been made into slaves and forced to construct Sorocaba and yet they are not recognized and no monument is made to them for their enforced labor.
A three day workshop with indigenous students in the bachelor program of UFSCar was also part of the work process. The participants in the workshop interviewed their non-indigenous colleagues on campus about issues which are important to indigenous students at UFSCar. Their video-taped interviews are exhibited in the installation Um Vazio Pleno in SESC along with images, at the request of the communities, of the process of the making of the ceramic objects by Maximino Rodrigues as well as images of the ceramic workshop he conducted at Kallipety Aldeia in São Paulo at the invitation of Giselda Pires de Lima.
