Oculesics: An Investigation of Cross-Cultural Eye Contact

Alves asked Europeans what did they think if a person did not look them in the eye while conversing. The consensus is that the person is lying, guilty or lacking in courage.

But most non-Europeans view direct eye contact as a sign of aggression and lack of respect.
