Eu e os Matarazzos (Me and the Matarazzos), 2014

Site specific wall collage

Alves made this work just before the destruction of the Matarazzo Hospital in São Paulo where she was born. It narrates the story of her family and their link through employment, politics and social situations to the Matarazzos, empresarios and industrialists. At the same time, Alves critically denounces the glorification of the bandeirante (enslavers and killers of indigenous peoples and thieves of their territory and gold) as hero in contemporary Brazilian society. The Day of the Bandeirantes is annually celebrated on November 14th in Brazil.
