The failure of the Samarco dam in the town of Mariana in Minas Gerais in Brazil in 2015 resulted in a disaster which caused the deaths of 19 people, and unleashed millions of tons of toxic mine trailings into the Rio Doce, (Sweet River) which is a water source for the Krenak people whose territory the river flows through.
