Gris, 1994

Installation

An installation for the group show Calma (Calmness) in the artists's collective, Temistocles 44, in Mexico City in 1993. The installation, Gris (Grey) attempted to induce calmness by the process of categorizing objects – something that Europeans and their descendants find calming. Grey is considered a "natural" background color in photography. Alves explores the strangeness of everyday objects while at the same time making combinations and juxtapositions that seem to almost make sense but never do. It all begins with a large photograph of grey sharks and proceeded to place into categories objects with the shape of a shark.
