Garrison Creek, 2019

Site specific installation
Jute bags, earth, City of Toronto archival photograph on fabric

The work was commissioned by Evergreen Brick Works for “The Shoreline Dilemma”, Toronto Biennale, 2019.

A bridge crossed over the Garrison Creek along Harbord Street in what is now Bedford Park in Toronto.
Garrison Creek along with most of the bridge was buried in 1930 because new residents could now move into the area because of the bridge and they used the creek as their trash can.Today there is no more creek or the valley they related with and lived in. “Garrison Creek”, the installation for the Toronto Biennale consists of an image of the creek when they still flowed free under the bridge which would result in their dismissal from active being. The installation also consists of a pile of jute bags filled with earth. That earth is the result of actions by concerned residents who have been invited by the artist to participate in a long-term excavation of the Garrison Creek who was never consulted on whether they wanted to be dismissed from history.
