Rose Marble Table, 2000

Site specific installation

In the Netherlands, cultural attitudes convert private space into a public one. Houses have large windows with curtains pulled back, giving passers-by full view of private life.
In parks, picnic tables are set closely together, again affirming the public over private desires or needs. In a park in Tilburg, Alves placed a marble table in a hidden corner of the park. The bottom of the table itself was curtained off. Underneath the table a pool of water lay between benches for two visitors. A place of possible private desires to begin.
