No soy su madre (I Am Not Your Mother), 1990
Installation
Mexico is the most misogynist country the artist has lived in and this experience resulted in several different works. No Soy Su Madre (I Am Not Your Mother) is the result of looking at how language is used in contemporary Mexico, in the literature or discourse about nature. "The misogyny in Mexico results in a quotidian idea that a woman can only be a virgin, mother or prostitute - at the same time there is the language used about nature - the rape of the virgin forest, mother nature, etc.”
In Mexico, this was combined with patriarchal idea of benevolent protection; to be given or taken according to very specific ideas of “nature”, and within the colonial context that idea was a European concept of nature. The installation includes a series of works on looking at nature while riding by in a car or boat - as most of us would see nature in the Americas.
